Abstract: Water is an essential factor in our daily life and one of the most vivid scenery in the nature. Water may modify the local atmosphere, purify the air, irrigate plants, breed fish and prevent from fire, all of which are the important factors for the landscape design.

1. Water landscape is the most attractive design factor in the residential scenery
In the residential environment design, how to deal with water is a rather significant element. Under the meteorological effects, water form into various natural sceneries, with people like landing on the so-called wonderland, where the children can play and the old can walk. Even in the period that water is not for sightseeing, the water landscape effects can be handled with well too, such as paving cobbles on the bottom of the pond, so that after drawing off the water there is still withered scenery in the winter. For another instance, the water fountain might be designed as fountain without water at all, and then when it is not in use the site can be taken advantage as a gathering venue. The outcome is enriching the diversity of the residential landscape and providing exercise and recreation site for people.
2. Water landscape classification of residential areas
Natural water includes river, lagoon, stream and spring etc., largely with wide water surface, which is the important natural scenery in the residential area. Natural water can be designed as walking track or recreation activity center with the public constructions. During the water design of residential landscape, people should be accessible to the water more conveniently, with the natural situation of the water next to the buildings. At the same time, it must not be forgotten that water will reflex obviously when there is no wind. By then the world reflexed on the surface of the water will give people like in a dream, as beautiful as poetry and painting.
Ascribed to the reason that water flow and sound can motivate the air atmosphere and fulfill the environment with pleasure, this man-made water are the “core”and most active factor in the residential area landscape. In the man-made water design, it must be considered of the local climate in the living environment and demand of people’s living behaviors and activity styles. Hence, most design methods are flexible, not limited to sightseeing, but paying more attention to how to meet the need of contemporary living life, so that people are able to be aware of water’s beauty and to take advantage of water to hold various exercise and entertainment. Not only the natural conditions, but residents’ psychological features and rules are taken into account during the man-made water design. These aspects of site selecting, shaping and size are widely reckoned in order to satisfy the function and enquiries.
