【Abstract】In this paper, the writer has bring forward a query on the answer of the question, The family ____ he is staying with lives in town, the given answer of which is B. The writer wants to know the word family means a family or the family member and the predicate verb should be “stay in” which means living in somewhere or “stay with” which means staying with someone.

人教出版社全日制普通高级中学教科书(必修)英语,第一册(上)第二页有这样一个选择关系代词填空的句子,The family______ he is staying with lives in town. 该题《人教出版社》第一册教参83页填该题答案是that。笔者认为该题所给答案毫无疑问,但笔者认为该句值得商榷。
还得从family这个词说起,family一词为家庭:(见《现代高级英汉双解辞典》第388页)。例:
Almost every family in the village has a man in the army.这村子里几乎每一家都有一个男子从军。(Note sing. vb. after collective noun.)(注意此集合名词后用单数动词。)
My family are early risers.我全家都是早起的人。(Note pl. vb. after family, as members of my family.)(注意family指我家里的人,故其后的动词为复数。)
Family指“家庭(为单数)”和“家庭成员,家属”(为复数)。(见《外研社实用英汉词典》第319页)。
再看从句谓语动词stay with
①与…留在一起;跟着…不离开。
②住在…家里;在家里作客(见《大英汉词典》第1477页)。
③stay(live)with friends和朋友住在一起(见《现代高级英汉双解辞典》第1076页)。
④stay with和某人住在一起(见《新标准中学生英语词汇用法全解》第1353页)。
stay in the house待在家中,stay (live)in a(n)hotel住在馆(见《现代高级英汉双解辞典》第1076页)。stay in呆在家里,在家,(见《大英汉词典》第1477页)
综上例句分析,笔者认为,该句stay with和…住在一起解,family为家里人,后面主句动词应为复数live,而不应为lives。如用lives,定语从句中stay with应改为stay in,视family家庭(集合名词)。所以The family that I am staying with lives in town.应改为The family that I am staying with live in town. 或The family that I am staying in lives in town.
