摘 要：whether和if都有“是否”的意思，在英语学习中容易混淆。本文从九个方面详细分析了它们的区别，指出了应该注意的一些问题，来帮助英语学习者正确地使用whether和if。

连词whether和if常用来引导名词性从句，不作句子成份，词义为“是否”，而且都不能省略。whether可以用于所有的名词性从句中，而if一般只用于宾语从句中。我们可以从以下几个方面了解whether与if的区别。
一、引导主语从句、表语从句、同位语从句时都用whether
Whether he will be able to come is unknown．(主语从句)
他能不能来还不知道。
The question whether he should come himself or send another one hasn’t been decided．(同位语从句)他亲自来还是派人来，这个问题还没定下来。
The problem is whether we’ll be able to arrive in time．(表语从句) 问题是我们是否能够及时到达。
注意：whether引导主语从句在句首时，不能用if代替。
例如：If he’ll come hasn’t been decided．(×)
但如果是用it作形式主语时，whether和if都可以用来引导主语从句。
It is not clear to me whether／if she likes the present．
她是否喜欢这件礼物对于我来说还不大清楚。
二、在引导宾语从句作动词的宾语时，whether和if常可以互换。但从句中如果有or not提出两种选择时，只能用
whether，不能用if
I don’t know whether／if he can come．
我不知道他是否能来。
Let me know whether you can come or not．
你能来还是不能来，请告诉我一下。
Tell me whether or not you are interested．
告诉我你有没有兴趣。
三、虽引导宾语从句，但为了强调宾语部分，也可把从句放在句首，此时只用whether不用if
Whether he will come I am not sure.他是不是来我拿不准。
四、介词的宾语从句只能用whether引导
I haven settled the question of whether I’ll go back home．
我是否回家，还没有定。
It all depends on whether the weather looks good．
一切都取决于天气如何。
She was undecided about whether she should accept his offer．
她拿不定主意应该不应该接受他的好意。
五、在带to的不定式前只能用whether，不能用if
She doesn’t know whether to get married now or wait．
她不知道是现在结婚，还是等等再说。
He hesitated about whether to drive or take the train.
他开车去还是坐火车去，犹豫不决。 ，
The question is whether to go to Munich or Vienna．
问题是去慕尼黑还是去维也纳。
六、用if会引起歧义时，要用whether来引导
Please let me know whether you want to go．
你是否想去，请告诉我一下。
(如换成if，则既可看作条件从句又可看作宾语从句。)
We discussed whether we should close the shop．
我们讨论了是否该把店关掉．
(如换成if，同样也能引起歧义。)
七、如果宾语从句是否定结构，则用if，而不用whether
I don’t care if he doesn’t show up．
他来不来我都不在乎。
Dinner was almost over when Dan，still looking hungry，grinned and asked Dave if he wasn’t going to have some bread．
晚饭快吃完时，丹(他看上去还没吃饱)笑着问戴维还要不要吃些面包
八、在及物动词discuss后的宾语从句中，只能用whether，不能用if
We discussed whether we should make a change in our plan. 我们讨论了是不是要对我们的计划作一些修改。
We were discussing whether we should discuss the business with them. 我们正在讨论我们是否要和他们谈这个生意。
九、在引导让步状语从句时，用whether…or…不管是…还是…
Well resolutely wipe out the intruders whether they come from the land，the sea or the air.
不管侵略者从陆上来、海上来，还是从空中来，我们都要坚决消灭之。
Whether you like it or not，you must do it well．
不管你喜欢还是不喜欢，你必须把它做好。
Whether or not it rains／Whether it rains or not，we’re playing football on Saturday.
无论下不下雨，我们星期六一定踢足球。
